CSA × A New Layer
A New Layer exhibition was a collaboration of five Swedish designers and their contemporary interpretation of traditional Taiwanese lacquer art resulting in a variety of unique objects made with this ancient technique. Lacquer has been used in East Asia for over 7000 years and encompasses a variety of techniques and applications. Carina was among the five designers invited by NTCRI to Taiwan to work with artisans and develop these objects. A broad palette of materials such as wood, metal, wicker bamboo, ceramics, stone, fabric and mother-of-pearl were also used and combined with lacquer techniques. Carina contributed to this exhibition with the pieces shown above, a ceramic tea-set, wicker bamboo baskets, lacquer trays and platforms. The project resulted in an exhibition at the the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm, the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, The Form Design Center in Malmö and Espace Modem in Paris. The project was made possible with support by the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute (NTCRI), The Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Centre Culturel de Taiwan and the Taiwan Mission in Stockholm as well as the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities.
